And so I've finished reading 1984. Must say I'm really stunned.

I was not expecting such a good book. *is in love*

There were some boring parts indeed, but the good ones definitely made up for them.

"Until the become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they they have rebelled they cannot become conscious."

"Sanity is not statistical."

"All this marching up and down and cheering and waving flags is simply sex gone sour."

"Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows."

"It was the product of a mind similar to his own, but enormously more powerful, more systematic, less fear-ridden. The best books, he perceived, are those that tell you what you know already."

"It was more natural to exist from moment to moment, accepting another ten minutes' life even with the certainty that there was torture at the end of it."

"We control matter because we control the mind. Reality is inside the skull."

"For the first time he perceived that if you want to keep a secret you must also hide it from yourself."

"You were the dead; theirs was the future. But you could share in that future if you kept alive the mind as they kept alive the body, and passed on the secret doctrine that two plus two make four."

I didn't get the title, what's that about? o.O

It's a quote from the book. Goes hand in hand with that quote about sex gone sour. *grins*

Surprised, are you? *sigh* See, I told you precisely that: it's a fantastic book despite the boring parts.

"We shall abolish the orgasm" -- one of my favourite quotes, actually; if you think about it, this, the end and the 2+2 line pretty much sum up the entire society described. There are others, of course; "I didn't betray Julia" is one of the strangest ... it's highly emotional, in a way, but cold... Hm. I'm not sure I made sense.

Should I ask why three of the most famous lines are missing? Well, it doesn't matter.

WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH

There you go. ^_^

By the way, do you now understand my overpowering need to write that in caps? *grins*

I did. *grins*

Those words wouldn't have the same effect if not capitalized.

Guessing you meant "TP" -- the answer is no. Just... most. And he's the main character in a few.

(Where's that icon from? o.O)

He seems like a VERY NICE GUY. *grins*

(I have absolutely no idea. I just liked it. And couldn't find anything better, really.)

*points* I liked that one too.

Where is yours from, again?

[identity profile] nancy-downs.livejournal.com 2005-08-04 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I am! I didn't know I would end up liking it that much. I swear, at first I couldn't believe you that there were boring parts.

The end as in, the last lines?

I like that line very much. And, yeah... I think you did make sense. *grins*

Well, everybody writes those, so... *shrugs*

Yep. You saw reason, eventually. ^^

Yep.

Good!

Well, there's a reason that they do, you know.
