We were watching Pheobe say that line on the very night that my sister decided it would be appropriated to come to the world.
Bel and dad left home around midnight, and she was officially born at 5h35; 2.7 kilos; 47 centimeters; cutest baby in the world;my last chance to have a left-handed sibling; beautiful eyes; pink little person; my already loved Clarice.
I've played with her for almost an hour non-stop; she's hypnotizing. Like my grandfather said, the feelings proportioned by a birth are absoulutely unique. Just like mum, I now have three siblings: two sister, one brother; 16 years between me and the youngest one.
Love them all so much.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (USA/UK, 2005) ****
What to say about this film? Well, rating it was very difficult.
Tim Burton did an excellent job, I must say. The film is visually gorgeous; the soundtrack is so NMBC-ish, therefore brilliant (oompa-loompas songs were also great); make-up was beautiful; the cast very well chosen (with a few exceptions)... I'd say that if the other version didn't exist, maybe I'd have liked it more. But, then again, I'm not sure if I'd like the story that much. Either way, it's not easy to pretend I simply didn't see the other one, but I did my best to avoid comparisons while watching it (even though some were inevitable).
Willy Wonka. The man. Jonnhy Depp was, as usual, stunning in his part. I'm sure no other actor would possiblybe gay enough play it like he did. At least, not that particular Wonka, after all, Burton obviously wrote him thinking of Depp. Definitely one of, if not the, best thing in the movie.
That's when I first realized that I was watching one of the biggest classics in the world and the best thing of the movie seemed to be the main actor (who is not even supposed to be the main character). Even though Depp is always Depp, there was something wrong about all this.
And so I got to the wonderful conclusion that the biggest flaw of the film was the script, which, let's face it, if one gets wrong one may be in serious trouble. There were too many clichés for Burton; a sub-plot that didn't really have to be there (except for the ending to happen, but, really, he could've come up with a much better finale); the main plot was developed by a voice-over which was...not the right thing to do. Letting aside all the gay jokes, the dark humor and a little bit of sarcasm, the script was too Disney-ish.
The characterization of Mike TV was, I'd say, better than in the other movie (the "stop mumbling" jokes were awesome); Veruca's was practically the same (the squirrels were fantastic, though), so was Augustus; don't think I prefer thisMello Violet, but they're both too different to compare; Charlie...well they're both Gary Stu's, but the other one is less, and I think I prefer him, for at least he was a developed character, whereas the new Charlie wasn't developed at all (which has much to do with the beginning of the film); oompa-loopas as old drag-queens were great; Grandpa Joe sucked, really (actually, Charlie's whole family sucked); Willy Wonka...impossible to compare. If I had to chose, I'd go for the first one, though. Sorry, Depp. *cries*
In a nutshell: as a Tim Burton/Jonnhy Depp fan, I liked it very much; as a film itself, it isn't that excellent; as a fan of the old version...I still prefer that one (if comparisons must be made).
"Everything here is eatable. I'm eatable, but that, my children, is called cannibalism and it is frowned upon in most societies." - Willy Wonka, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
I still have three more movies to talk about, but am just lazy. Will post later.
